Parallella University Program 23

The Parallella University Program

The goal of the Parallella University Program (PUP) is to ensure that every academic institution doing  work in the area of parallel programming research and/or education has access to inexpensive and open massively parallel computing hardware. Any academic institution actively involved in research and education within the area of parallel computing may apply for the program. Program application acceptance will be evaluated based on the

  • Potential impact of proposed research or education program
  • Track record within the area of parallel computing
  • Level of openness in journal and source code publication.

The Parallella University Program will seek to maximize diversity both in terms of research areas and geographical representation. Participates in the program will be provided with free hardware and development software as described in the Parallella University Program Agreement.  The Parallella University Program runs on a calendar year basis and ends on December 31.

Universities must submit an application for resubmission for entry into a new calendar year program.

Universities interested in applying for this program, should submit a signed Parallella University Agreement  form to

Our department preordered the Parallella cluster kit to play around with heavy duty bioinformatic tasks before I was aware of this program. Should we cancel the order and apply for the PUP?

PUP currently only donates one board, not a cluster, and the priority of your order shipment will currently be quite a bit ahead of the PUP shipments! I recommend doing both!

Send in the application with as much detail as possible and it will be considered - the program is intended for research at universities, so if you have a research objective, it may work!

Congratulate great progress of 100,000 cores shipping to backers!!! Can we have updates on the progress of academic program 2013 and 2014? May we expect that next shipping will include some of this academic program? Thanks.

I have a project in mind but I'm not affiliated with a university. However, I live across the street from Howard University in Washington DC, and know some of the faculty in engineering and other disciplines. Can I recruit them to apply for this program so they could do my project? Can people with good project like mine :D be able at sometime to get boards too? Everything good/useful doesn't come just from educational institutions. Inventors/thinkers need some love too.

Here's a suggestion. Could you create a program for people (like me) to present|propose projects that they would like to see done by anybody who has a system. That way people who don't have the $$ or university affiliations (and can't get boards themselves) can maybe get someone with a system interested in their project, and work in collaboration with them on the project.

I created a method to do a fast prime sieve here: I have a version in C++ using OpenMP to try to parallelize it, but it would really fly with more parallel processing. The Parallela board seems like a perfect fit for this algorithm.

I am a student of M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (INDIA), and since our college has already enrolled in your PUP program for the year 2014. I need to know the details of who has applied for the board (I am in Program and If UG Department has applied for the board) so I can contact them and start my research using the parallella platform, kindly let me know on this. And If needed can we apply for more boards or get a university discount on this matter...(Please note that you have stopped shipping for India and even in RS I cannot find a dealer shipping for India)... Reply as soon as possible on this regard.. mail me at :

Hi Andreas - How can The George Washington University get involved in Parallella University? As an alumnus of GWU, over 60 years old, I can audit ant GWU course for only $65.00/course. If the Parallella were showcased in EE or CS classes, I'd be very pleased. Fred
