so with mass market hardware, $200 approx gets you a card with 4tflops (4billion transistors), but thats 120watts .. not suitable for drones and so on

the 1024 core epiphany is at ~4billion transistors, that would also be 4tflops? (1024x2x2ghz perhaps) .. but I imagine consuming much less power for a problem that fits on chip

with sufficient volume, should it have been possible to get a 'parallela 2' into that sort of price range .. the ultimate device for drones etc

E5 is published to be 117 mm^2. Let's call that 9x13mm. If you use a wafer calculator to figure out many die candidates you can get per wafer, it's a little more than 500 on a 12" wafer. If the cost per wafer is $10,000, you end up with $20/E5. This is about the best case scenario and cannot go lower unless you run your own fab. It also doesn't count design, packaging, tapeout, masks, making a product, or profit. It's why it's often important to have a large market because those other costs can sometimes be large.

BTW, the 4 single precision TFLOPS number is based on 2 SP FMAs/clock at 1 GHz, not 2 GHz.

Do you happen to know anyone looking to make 100,000+ drones with 4 TFLOPS onboard?

Interesting. At those prices in bulk maybe one could imagine rather nifty 2, 4 chip solutions ending up getting pretty widepread too, perhaps

heh; I could only personally account for demand for a handful of chips unfortunately.

I think we would agree between the drones, cameras and actuators out there , there should be demand for well over 100,000. those delivery bots they're testing out, dashboard cameras, the potential for swarms of agri-bots,.. there must even be 10,000 deep learning researchers would would take 10 each (DL shoved on a USB or ethernet device perhaps instead of needing a PC/graphics card?).

But how to realise all that..

i guess we can compare to this, http://www.nvidia.com/object/drive-px.html I see they claim 24't-ops' on their 2 chip board, but those would be the 8bit 4-way multiply-add, 1.5trillion instructions per chip perhaps. I wasn't sure if the epiphany had that specific instruction , but I'm guessing it must at least have 'popcount' for a 1bit option ("instructions for cryptography.."). 2Chips would give 128mb 'total onchip memory', that would be rather special

I don't know about 100,000+, but I'm working with an early stage IoT company. I've talked with the CEO a few times about Epiphany, and he's at least interested.
