I hadn't heard about this until earlier today. It looks interesting. I'm a big fan of the open hardware philosophy despite not being a hardware guy. But for $320 ($160 academic price) you can get the FPGA board and develop the architecture if you're interested.
It remains to be seen how well it can perform. I have concerns about how well their cache will scale with high core counts. Apparently, the cache coherency scales across tiled chips.

fyi, the ancestry of this processor is Tilera-->MIT RAW (through David Wentzlaff, the professor leading the group at Princeton).
