Chip Manufacturing

I have a quick question: Are y'all producing the Parallella chips yourselves, or are you having someone else do it? The reason I ask is I am starting up a company soon dealing with high-speed optical data transfer, and I need to be able to produce a custom chip. Plus, I want to test my idea's capabilities on the boards I'll be getting.
Edit: I want to see how well my 17 GByte/sec connection works with the Epiphany.

My understanding is that Adapteva design and sell chips and outsource the actual manufacture of them to third parties like Globalfoundries. This news item about integration into systems on a chip may be of interest:

theover, what's wrong with getting a custom chip manufactured? Even though it would be more expensive initially, it could/would be faster and smaller than an FPGA.
The reason I was asking is because I am still learning about the whole process.
