Registration for organisations is about to open for Google Summer of Code 2013. Do you think Parallella should take part, and if so what would make great student projects? Bonus points if you would be willing to be a mentor!

Is creating an LLVM compiler too big for a summer project? Seems to me it is something we would really like, but is challenging. Would be suitable for advanced Computer Science students and would be a worthwhile experience for them. Edit: have just noticed that the students work as individuals, not as teams.

Alternatively how about a visual recognition project? Would make a good demonstration afterwards to show what the system can do. Need to set a realistic level of difficulty though.

Some powerful things have been done Google-summer, but why would it not be right to equally think about other sources of Open Source work hours, like universities, (small ?) commercial people (m/f) and interested hobbyists. I mean there's not so much to be had from google that doesn't exist otherwise, except some publicity and some webspace.

A good thought in the Open Source is to prevent all kinds of groups of interested people to get twisted on who provides what, and why, as in Open Source. For instance, I recall a problem compiling a certain compiler being solved, but not from the people who made it public, There's not much guarantee that a google project is getting great Open Source managament and mentorship, like a compiler for a commercial high flying project deserves. Some not-so-great piece of work that compiles here and there and gets certain tests compiled right isn't my idea of a good time. Of course any work shared with the world is nice, even if it;s just a direction, but the EEs involved in parallella could better stay free from endless IT iterations going nowhere special.
