Parallel demonstrators

We have the matrix multiplication example as our "parallel Hello World" and Adapteva have also developed a computer vision/face detection demonstrator based on OpenCV. But what else would make great demonstrators, both in terms of processing power and breadth of applications?

Bonus points for:

* Quick to implement
* Particular educational merit
* Can be used as a building block for real world applications

seems to be a taboo, but how about a brute-force n-bit number factorization? people say that for a small number n the n-bit encryption can be broken by fast supercomputers, maybe some multiprocessor thing idly lying around at the local uni. this would raise the question, how many parallella would be needed then to get done in reasonable time? especially interesting of course is how many bits encryption will be needed to raise the expenses, for the parallellas involved in breaking it, beyond a reasonable margin too.
